beat is the new identity of the Eating Disorders Association. beat became our working name in February 2007. Eating Disorders Association remains our legally registered charity name.
EDA was formed in 1989 when two local charities, Anorexic Aid and Anorexic Family Aid merged to form the UK’s first national organisation devoted to eating disorders. These founder charities were started by Dr Pat Hartley and Mrs Nancy Pearce respectively. They had both identified an urgent need for information, help and support – a need we continue to meet today.
In 1992, a third charity merged with EDA – the Society for the Advancement of Research into Anorexia – SARA. We retain a commitment to supporting research by collaborating in research studies, encouraging people to take part in trials and by promoting evidence based treatment.
EDA developed to support people affected by bulimia and binge eating as well as anorexia.
beat seeks to build on the reputation that EDA established, to prove our commitment to the work EDA began, and to drive forward with an increased impact.
