Award Winners 2006

Kandy Giles - She supported my mum through the most worrying times, when I was very ill, giving her hope, encouragement and practical advice.  She organised support groups for sufferers and their families which were a huge success.”

“Kandy has a particular passion for helping patients with eating disorders. By sharing information with patients and families about research and conferences she shows her commitment and belief that no-one should be kept in the dark, reassuring sufferers that they are not alone and help is available.”

“I truly believe Kandy saved my life”

Dr Jill Welbourne - There are numerous patients who owe their lives and wellbeing to Jill.  She worked tirelessly to promote the cause of eating disorders.  Without Jill’s support in the early days I do not believe our clinic would ever have become established”

“Jill has ‘held my hand’ for nearly thirty years with a never ending supply of encouragement, kindness and human warmth.  Without her help and dedication I would not be here today.  I cannot think of anyone who deserves this award more”

♦♦♦

Doreen Williams - “Doreen has literally devoted a huge proportion of her life to eating disorders – she started to work with eating disorders in the late 1980s when very few people gave much time to this field.  She launched a support group, which became the national charity, when she saw how little help there was for sufferers and their families.”

“Her achievements are too many to count – and all of this as a volunteer!  She more than deserves this award and it would be a fitting recognition of the incredible contribution she has made to the world of eating disorders, most of which has gone unrecognised.”

♦♦♦

SEEDS team - “The team have understood the importance of prompt sensitive follow up to patients after a period of inpatient care.  They visit all inpatients frequently even though these hospitals are distant from Suffolk.  Such is the success of the team that some patients have even moved house to access the service”

"They work tirelessly helping and supporting all of their clients to try and regain their lives and strength and never give up on us.  They are honest and straightforward in their approaches and provide the trust and confidence that is essential in order to recover”

Special Award to Professor Arthur Crisp - This year there was a special award without the formality of the nomination process.  This was to Professor Arthur Crisp who asked Professor Gerald Russell to accept it on his behalf and convey his thanks to beat and his regrets for being unable to attend in person. Not long after the awards ceremony we were informed of the sad news of the death of Professor Crisp
