A lot of people in my class know about my ED (I dont know how though...) so when i brought in a Vogue magazine they were all like 'should you be reading that?' and I was all 'why wouldnt I?' these people can't seem to realise that mabye I'm like this because i was bullied for 5 years. Why do people always blame fashion magazines for eating disorders?

That's exactly my point and in Nicklebacks new song rockstar theres a line in it "and the girls stay skinny cos they just won't eat" I found this appalling as if they were saying it's just a fad and it'll be over soon. I couldn't believe it. Why does no one understand?

I thought in nickleback's song it was "and we'll all stay skinny 'cause we just won't eat" but then I do often get the words to songs wrong. But yeah I'm sorry but that song is quite bad! It glamourises being thin followed by "hey, hey I wanna be a rock star!" almost like"hey, hey I don't want to eat and get a brain disease!" I know you all think pictures and media and social expectations do not contribute to eating disorders but you are wrong. I know that I am affected when I see pictures of skinny women or hear lyrics like that in songs. They are not the cause of an eating disorder but they do contribute and add up to the sufferer thinking what they are doing is right and"the norm" because it seems like that is what is asked of us in our society.
It's like baking you can't just cook it withjust a single ingredient can you?? You need all the other ingredients to make it. Just like reading fashion magazines cannot "make" an eating disorder, you have to have low self esteem, body issues perhaps have been bullied or abused in the past as well maybe have a few mental illnesses running in the family etc etc.
No I agree eating disorders are not fads! It does my head in because I think my parents sort of think that about me but I know its not!
But yeah I think they do impact people who are vulnerable that's not everyone but it's people like me and you! I mean I got a magazine the other month and I was shocked! It scared me so much! All it is is adverts with skinny women in and articles (basically pictures) of deathly skinny women in! It struck me that it was written and compiled by women with eating disorders themselves, I mean I like fashion and I have an eating disorder and that shocked even me! It disgusted me a little bit it was like a book of thinspiration! If media wasn't a problem with eating disorders then thinspiration wouldn't exist.
I am shocked that you're friends/peers are so ignorant and rude. If they want to comment they should get their facts straight first. I hate it when people butt their noses in whilst knowing completely nothing.

Hey, I used to think that pictures of skinny models didn't effect me, but now I realise that they really do, even if it's just sub-consciously. I know that is bad but the media definitely puts pressure on girls to be thin, and sometimes people like me can''t help but be affected. I have these dreams of being a model, but then think what is the point in all these hopes, they can never happen because I am not as skinny as the girls in the magazines. Hope you are all well, love Hannah xxx

I totally agree! everyone blames EDs on the media and superskinny models because it's the easiest answer.
I find that Nickelback song really rude, it's like it's saying oh it's fne just to not eat! I totally agree with you pink_whizz; it makes not eating seem glamourous and really doesn't understand just how serious ED's are!
I hope everyone is doing well!
lots of love

I think sometimes eating disorders get too generalized for many different reasons. One week I'll read an article where a girl says she never was interested or looked at fashion, yet suffered from anorexia, and the next girls with anorexia scanning pages of fashion magazines, then there's this whole stupid 'thinspiration' stuff. To be honest I think for some people it can act as a trigger, others a cause, and others has little to no effect.
But at the end of the day, each of us as individuals must be responsible, look at things with a cold eye and ask ourselves whether we are being affected by unrepresentative social ideologies of beauty. If we are, then we have the choice to stop exposing ourselves to that particular trigger [which can be potentially addictive].
'm not putting down anyone who reads fashion, Hell, I read * But it's still my choice and I am working on improving myself. Maybe those magazines aren't triggering to you, but for most people they are. And sinces we tend to formulate our opinions by what is common to happen, I can see their cause for concern.

I read a lot of magazines and they don't influence me personally on how I want my weight to be. I have read* and * mainly for inspiration for my art, I do notice how thin some models are and how normal looking some actually are now.
However it is more the articles that annoy me about anorexia and diets and thiness, in every women's magazine I get the impression that we are being told to eat healthier and to lose weight, although I understand that isn't the case for me. But I don't want to open a mag full of low calorie recipes when I can't eat them!
I do like looking at mags for fashion though, I think it's nice to be able to see what I want to buy when I've put on weight and I can go shopping again :)

Personally, I always found fashion magazines to be triggering to me. They didnt MAKE me have an ED but they helped fuel it, by making me think it was the norm to be so skinny, and they did make me feel fat, even when I wasnt.
But, I agree with fluffinator, in that we have a choice whether to read them or not. I no longer look at 'thinspirational' pictures online, cos its far too triggering, and it will not help me at all. But I still read magazines, and just try not to focus on the models. Its not always easy, but I just try really hard to think that its not the norm, and most of the pictures have probably been manipulated. And that makes me feel a little better.
If it ever gets too much, I just throw the magazine down and go do something else.
