Depression

Everyone has good days when they are feeling happy about themselves and their lives. Everyone has bad days when they feel unhappy or low.

Depression is when you feel low a lot of the time and don’t feel like things will get better. Some people describe it like ‘having a cloud hanging over them’.

There are different reasons why someone might be depressed, some reasons could be that somebody close to them has died, they are having a difficult time at school/work/college, they are having tough time at home or someone is causing them to feel upset and scared. Depression can also develop alongside an eating disorder.

Depression can

  • consume your thoughts
  • stop you from concentrating on school/uni/college/work
  • make sleeping difficult
  • cause you to feel like people are talking about/watching you
  • make you feel like the negative stuff won’t ever get better

It is important to tell someone that you are feeling like this. A parent/relative, a friend, a teacher or lecturer.

You might want to think about speaking to your doctor. Doctors sometimes prescribe medication; they can also refer you to a counsellor, psychiatrist or psychologist to help you feel better.
