The Recovery Club can give you the opportunity to talk about any concerns you may have relating to your eating and the recovery process. By accessing the sessions you can gain peer support from other young people affected by eating disorders in an online group setting. The clubs have been developed to provide a support service that will enable you to explore the recovery process, acquiring skills and strategies, to help with your recovery.
By hosting regular Recovery Clubs facilitated by young people in recovery and with guest facilitators such as professionals working in the eating disorders field, we hope to empower you to feel confident in seeking help early, and for you to also develop an awareness of what treatment may be offered and how these services can be accessed.
We also hope that the Recovery Club will enable you to share your experiences and explore the recovery process. Whilst the Recovery Club is not intended as a substitute for medical or professional support, we hope that the session will support, encourage you to explore the options available to you, demystify treatment and empower you to access professional help for your eating disorder.
Current Recovery Club sessions
beat re-launched 'open' Recovery Club sessions in June. The open Recovery Club sessions take place on a monthly basis and are open to anyone aged 25 and under who would like support with their eating and recovery.
The next session 'Coping with Change' will take place on Wednesday 25th August between 6.30-8pm. The session will be co-facilitated by Alan Dunlop a Specialist Eating Disorder Nurse working in the NHS:
"I have been a Registered Mental health Nurse (RMN) since 1991, and since then I have gained a wide range of experience helping people in hospital and community settings. Since qualifying I have had specialist training in group psychotherapy, Solution Focused brief Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness Meditation and Compassion-Focused therapy, as well as in the Medical and Psychiatric treatment and management of Eating Disorders. I have spent most of the last 8 years working primarily with people who suffer from Eating Disorders, including time as the Lead Nurse for a specialist Eating Disorder unit. Currently I work as the Nurse Specialist for Eating Disorders for a Health Board in Scotland; I focus on those 16+ but liaise with and help my colleagues in CAMHS when necessary. Part of my role involves raising awareness of Eating Disorders amongst the staff who work in the NHS in my region, and writing the protocols and guidelines (based on the latest and best research) that make sure that people know how best to help sufferers and their families. Another part is to offer advice, training and any support or help I can to our staff to help them best help sufferers and their families. As well as that, I work directly with a group of patients, who are often quite ill, working intensively to keep them safe and out of hospital. And long term, helping them to recover physically and mentally from their Eating Disorder so that they start to live their life again, and when it is appropriate working to support their close others (parents, siblings, husbands, children, whoever) through this difficult time."
Accessing Recovery Clubs
The Recovery Club uses the same software as beat’s Livechat. If you are already familiar with livechat and have used this service, you will access the Recovery Club in the same way.
If you are unfamiliar with our livechat service you will need to register with the beat messageboards and have Java downloaded to your computer.
You will need to have registered on our site (register here) and then login before you can enter chat.
If you have any questions please contact the Recovery Club Project Officer Jess: j.armitage@b-eat.co.uk
The PDF induction will explain a little more about the service and how you can access the livechat software in order to attend a Recovery Club session.
