Overcoming Bulimia Online

Overcoming Bulimia Online is an online self help intervention based on the proven Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach, for individuals with bulimia nervosa and related eating disorders. The user works through 8 sessions to help them learn, understand and overcome their condition, at their own pace and in the privacy of their own home.

The intervention helps the user develop structured CBT skills using video, sound and interactive questions. The materials lead the user clearly through a process of identifying issues in their life and how to develop strategies to change their current situation for the better.

Users of the package have described the benefits as follows: straight-forward, easy and user-friendly; a way of being in control because of the convenience of online access; and that they often feel more comfortable using a computer than speaking directly with a therapist.

CBT and evidence-based self-help therapies have been identified as two key priority treatments for bulimia sufferers by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), in its 2004 report ‘Core Interventions in the treatment and management of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and related eating disorders’.

The content has been authored by respected CBT practitioner, Dr Chris Williams who as a Past-President of British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (www.BABCP.com) has many years’ experience of treating patients suffering from conditions such as bulimia, anxiety and depression.

The course has also been researched with the help of Beat and updated in collaboration with Dr Ulrike Schmidt, the internationally recognised expert on eating disorders from the Institute of Psychiatry in London.

Individuals can be supported and monitored by their practitioner, who can check the user’s progress online. The intervention offers healthcare providers a high-quality, low-cost intervention, supporting such schemes such as ‘Improving Access to Psychological Therapies’ (IAPT) by helping individuals to get immediate help.
