It has been a busy few months for calls and emails for the helpline staff and we are glad to see many sufferers continuing to use the messageboards service. In the new year we hope to spread the word that our helpline team services are available and we are here to support people both over the phone or online via email, 1-2-1, live chat or text.
We have noticed a really positive trend over the past 6 months that more males have been using the helpline services. This is really great news because we want to challenge the stigma that sometimes prevents guys from talking about what they are going though with regards to their eating. Sometimes it’s reassuring for males to know that men get eating disorders and it’s okay to talk about it.
The new Live chat service has been going since the beginning of December and we hope that this service will continue to offer a great opportunity for sufferers around the country to receive and offer support to each other within a safe environment moderated by Youth team workers. There were two ‘Coping with Christmas’ Live chat sessions during Decemeber which provided young people and adult sufferers with the opportuntiy to share tips and strategies for coping with the anxiety that Christmas brings for many people with ED’s.
In the New Year we will be starting a new Live Chat service for adult sufferers following the high number of young people who have found these chat rooms a beneficial environment to express their feelings, explore their eating difficulties and discuss ways forward in terms of recovery. Beat moderators facilitate these chatrooms and ensure a non-judgmental and supportive environment where fears and hopes for recovery can be voiced. We hope that offering an additional service for adult sufferers will give an extra support option to adult sufferers who may prefer online support to telephone contact. These live chat sessions will be on every 2nd, 3rd and 4th Wednesday of each month beginning 3rd Wednesday in January (Wednesday 18th January) at 6.30pm - 7.45pm.
We hope that 2012 will be a good year and that as many people as possible know about our support services so that nobody has to be alone with their eating difficulties!
