What Happens at the Clinic?

Hello,

I'm new to this, so apologies if I do it all wrong!

I've recently got my act together and finally got together the courage to be a) diagnosed with an eating disorder and b) referred to the Eating Disorder Team.

My appointment is next week, and I just wondered whether people could tell me what is likely to happen? Will I have to be weighed?

Also, is it normal for my eating disorder to go absolutely crazy the week before I start getting help?

Thanks!

re: What Happens at the Clinic?

Hi MWizzle,

I've just read your thread, i hope you are doing ok and that is absolutely brilliant that you have admitted that you need help with your ed. It took me forever to admit to my illness and for years i have struggled on my own. I have AN and its been a real struggle but i finally admitted it to myself around a year and a half ago and have been having therapy through an eating disorders clinic as an out patient. I firstly went to see my GP who weighed me and asked a few questions about my ED then reffered me on. A couple of weeks later i recieved a letter for an appointment with someone who specialises in AN. The week before i was due to go i was so apprehensive and felt totally out of control which in turn affected my eating habits, which at that time where non exisitant. I was at such a low weight but because of my upcoming appointment i felt as though i wasnt in control of anything and thought that they would make me put on weight too fast.

When i attended my appointment i was put at ease straight away, the woman i saw was absolutely lovely although i was anxious at what she thought of me but she was very understanding and went through a series of questions mainly about past medical history, drug taking, the sorts of eating habits i have, when i thought it all started and that sort of thing. They weigh you to get a base weight to work towards slowing increasing it but they do work at your own pace although they do like to you continue to put on a bit or stay the same but gradually increase your food intake week by week. The person will work out your bmi and gives you the choice of either reffering you to a dietican for a meal plan or you can do your own. I did it by myself because i knew what foods i was more comfortable eating. My therapist also asked me to keep a food diary which i had to take in every week to see what i had consumed and my thoughts at the time of eating and things like that. But it all depends on which type of ED you are experiencing.

Weekly sessions are all based on things thats may have triggered the ED so they try and unravel any past events that may have triggered things off and try and find ways of coping with those better other than using food as a way of coping.

Its not so daunting as you may think and you are doing the right thing getting the help and i hope it all works out for you.

At the moment i am out of treatment as i discharged myself because of a few different issues and wasnt managing to cope with going to therapy but i will get back there when i am ready to as it does help.

I hope this is some kind of help and comfort to you and hope all goes well.

Let us know how you got on and im here if you need to chat more.

Hello!

Thankyou so much for your response - it was far more detailed than I'd hoped for and really, really helpful.

It's nice to know about eating plan straight away. It's something I'd appreciate, because I'm so fed up of trying to do this by myself that I'd love someone else to tell me what to eat for a change.

I will definitely let you know how I get on - it's lovely to have the chance to talk to other people who really understand!

Hello!

Sorry - I meant to reply before. Thanks for asking

The appointment was fine, thanks. I've had two assessments and I'm due to start counselling either this week or next. I feel so much better for actually having got up and done something about this.

thats so great that your now on the right road. well done MWizzle.

my ED went mad too so dont worrt it would have been your brain going into over time and saying that you are totally scared and that was how you were going to deal with the emotions.

hope its still all going well for you,

love and best wishes
