Raising awareness - Everybody knows somebody

Beat staff and volunteers are always struck by how many people tell you a personal story about eating disorders when you say you work or volunteer for Beat. This could be their own experience or somebody they know who has suffered.

We therefore want to use Eating Disorders Awareness Week to spread the message that Everybody knows somebody – eating disorders are more common than you think. This serious mental illness is affecting someone you know right now – in your street, in your school, in your workplace, even in your own home. Over 1.6 million people in the UK are affected by eating disorders including people of all ages and backgrounds.

We are encouraging people to help the person they know whether it’s your girlfriend, a work colleague, your best friend or your brother – reach out, talk to them and offer support. The sooner someone gets the help they need, the more likely they are to make a full recovery.

Ways you can support Everybody knows somebody:

  • Download the Everybody knows somebody poster and raise awareness in your local area. Put it up in your workplace, school, GP surgery or university
  • Talk about your own experience - contact your local media or give a talk. Read recovery stories specially uploaded to the website for Eating Disorders Awareness Week
  • Make sure you like our Facebook page facebook.com/beating.eating.disorders and follow us on Twitter @beatED
  • Hold an information stand at work, school, in your local library, GP surgery or anywhere you think might get people’s attention. We can provide you with information and leaflets
  • Read a different blog post written by sufferers
  • Find out how to support the person you know
